Key facts
- Circulating 558.1M, 100%
- No cap: supply can keep growing, see Supply discipline
Market data: CoinGecko, Oct 24, 2026. Scores reviewed Oct 23, 2026.
Assessment
The reverse-gas design is genuine plumbing: every unit of compute paid on the network burns ICP. The problem is scale and soundness. The burn is ~$2M a year against ~5.4% gross issuance, so supply still grows, and Mission 70's demand side (Cloud Engines, Caffeine) has not moved the burn rate. Insiders received about three quarters of genesis with no open sale, the NNS executes any upgrade on adoption, and the bloc voting with DFINITY decides contested proposals; repeated subnet stalls through 2026 pin security at 1. The token survived a 99.6% collapse and the supply-side cuts (voting rewards, node rewards, 2-year maximum dissolve delay) were delivered, which is the constructive part of the case.
How value reaches holders
The only flow to holders is the burn: ICP converted into cycles for compute, storage and bandwidth is destroyed by the Cycles Minting Canister, and ledger fees (0.0001 ICP) are burned, 0.678M ICP (~$2.0M) in the year to Oct 22, 2026. Against it, the NNS mints voting rewards (53,272 ICP/day, ~19.4M/yr, down ~40% under Mission 70 in early 2026) and XDR-denominated node-provider rewards, ~5.4% of supply a year gross under full disbursement per DFINITY's Mission 70 paper; ledger supply grew 3.5% (539.3M to 558.1M) because 113.5M ICP of earned maturity remains unminted. Staking yield is redistribution from non-stakers, not revenue

Two-way ↗low likelihood
- Cycle burn rate vs the 0.77 XDR/s Mission 70 threshold (0.053 XDR/s on Oct 23, 2026): above ~$5M/yr of burn lifts revenue to 2
- Mission 70 node-reward cuts reaching the 1.97% target and gross issuance near 5.4% by Jan 2027; net issuance below 3% would lift supply to 3
- Unminted maturity (113.5M ICP) being disbursed in size, and DFINITY balance disclosure
- Subnet stalls and NNS emergency upgrades; the share of voting power following DFINITY
- Any US ICP ETF filing
Research report
Oct 23, 2026 · source confidence 70%The Internet Computer uses a reverse-gas model: developers convert ICP into cycles to pay for computation and storage, and the ICP converted is destroyed, as are ledger transaction fees. That makes the burn a direct link between network use and supply, but its size is small. About 678,000 ICP, roughly $2 million, was burned over the past year, while the Network Nervous System issues new ICP to staked neurons as voting rewards and to node providers, whose rewards are set in a currency basket and therefore grow in ICP terms when the price falls. DFINITY's Mission 70 plan, announced in January 2026, has cut the daily voting-reward pool by about 40% and shortened the maximum staking period from eight years to two, lowering projected gross issuance to about 5.4% a year; the plan's demand side, a fifteen-fold rise in cycle burn, has not materialized so far. About 113.5 million ICP of earned staking rewards has not yet been minted and can be claimed by holders. At the 2021 launch there was no open public sale, and the DFINITY Foundation, team, early contributors and private investors held roughly three quarters of the genesis supply. Governance can upgrade any part of the network once a proposal passes, and several application subnets stalled between December 2024 and July 2026. No US exchange-traded product holds ICP.
Structure (13 facts)
- Chain
- Subnet-sharded L1 run by node machines owned by NNS-approved node providers; the Network Nervous System (NNS) DAO controls the registry, replica versions, all system canisters and the ICP ledger; 2,865 nodes, 750 assigned to 42 subnets, 101 node providers (Oct 22, 2026); application subnets typically 13 nodes
- Market
- price ~$2.75, market cap ~$1.53B, ~$49M/day volume (CoinGecko, Oct 23, 2026); ATH $700.65 on launch day (May 10, 2021), now -99.6%; -8% over one year, 1y range ~$2.02-$8.98
- Supply
- 558,124,393 ICP on the ledger (Oct 23, 2026) vs 539.30M a year earlier (+3.5%) and 551.92M on Apr 22, 2026 (+2.25% annualized since); genesis 469.2M (May 10, 2021); unminted neuron maturity 96.47M plus 17.08M staked maturity (113.5M, of which 43.3M sits in neurons that lost voting power)
- Emission
- voting rewards: rate fell on the genesis curve (10% to 5% of supply over 8 years) and Mission 70 (Jan 2026) shortened the maximum dissolve delay from 8 to 2 years and cut rewards: daily pool 88,371 ICP (Oct 22, 2025) to 53,272 ICP (Oct 22, 2026); node-provider rewards are XDR-denominated per node and converted at the 30-day ICP/XDR rate, so more ICP is minted as the price falls; Mission 70 paper: gross minting under full disbursement 9.72% (Jan 2026: voting 5.88%, nodes 3.84%) to 5.42% (Jan 2027: 3.45% and 1.97%)
- Mint authority
- the NNS governance canister is the ledger's minter; reward formulas and node reward tables are changeable by NNS proposals voted by staked neurons, which execute on adoption without a timelock; no cap
- Burn
- ICP converted to cycles (1T cycles = 1 XDR) is burned by the Cycles Minting Canister; ledger fees burned; cumulative ICP burned 2.970M (Oct 22, 2026), 0.678M over the trailing year (~$2.0M); cycle burn rate 53.3B cycles/s (~0.053 XDR/s, ~$2.3M/yr); Mission 70 needs 0.77 XDR/s for its 70% inflation cut; Cloud Engines (20% revenue burn) not yet producing material burn
- Distribution
- May 10, 2021 genesis of 469.2M ICP: seed donors 24.72% (2017 donation round), early contributors 9.5%, DFINITY Foundation ~24%, team ~18%, strategic partners and presale (2018 rounds led by a16z and Polychain), Internet Computer Association, advisors; community airdrop under 1%; no open public sale before trading began. Insiders ~3/4 of genesis, ~62% of the ~561M ICP ever issued. Tokenomist lists all genesis vesting as complete in 2025
- Governance
- 443,346 neurons, 287.1M ICP staked (51% of supply); periodic followee confirmation left 410,246 neurons with no voting power; DFINITY's known neuron 27 holds ~41 ICP and votes through followers; in 2026 governance tallies the bloc rejecting spam alongside DFINITY cast 560-618M of 735-798M voting power (~76-77%), while community motions DFINITY sat out passed with ~120M yes

- Controversies
- launch-day price collapse from ~$700 to under $50 within weeks; Arkham Intelligence report (Jun 2021) alleging insider selling; 2021 investor class action against DFINITY in N.D. Cal. (Roche Freedman removed as counsel May 2023)
- Usage
- ICP DeFi TVL $8.3M (Oct 23, 2026) vs $14.8M a year earlier; stablecoins $3.9M; ckBTC and ckETH chain-key assets; ICPSwap fees ~$0.11M trailing year
- Institutional access
- no US spot ICP ETF, trust or filing found in EDGAR full-text search; European ETPs from Valour (DeFi Technologies) incl. 1Valour ICP Physical Staking
- Unlocks
- no scheduled genesis unlocks remain; staked neurons dissolve over up to 2 years; maturity disbursement mints new ICP on demand
