Assessment

CRO is the clearest case on the board of an issuer rewriting supply: Crypto.com burned 70B CRO in 2021, then used a 62%-yes governance vote in Mar 2025 to mint 70B back into a reserve it runs, which now vests ~1.17B CRO a month (about 2.3% of float) into Crypto.com wallets until 2030. The reserve plus swept vested coins put over 60% of supply under one company, the chain's largest validators look issuer-run, and Cronos EVM is secured by a permissioned 'stake' token with four Cronos validators above the halt line. The engine is still a plan: Ult and Cronos Launch are five weeks old and the buy-and-burn contract is not live. The institutional story weakened in 2026: Trump Media's CRO treasury SPAC was terminated on Aug 7, the Truth Social Crypto Blue Chip ETF was withdrawn, and the US CRO ETF filings remain pending.

How value reaches holders

Almost nothing yet. Cronos POS mints CRO at 0.70%/yr (decaying 6.8% a month since the May 2026 v7 upgrade) and pays it to stakers, with 15% to the community pool; that pool's emissions are burned periodically by vote (4 x 50M through Mar 2025, 228M on Oct 3, 2026, 428M total), which recycles inflation rather than revenue. Prop 37 (passed Oct 3, 2026, signalling only) commits 100% of Ult and Cronos Launch revenue to monthly on-chain buy-and-burn, but the contract is in development and no revenue has been published; the same vote commits the 70B Strategic Reserve to backfill staking rewards as emissions decay. Cronos EVM fees (~$0.12M a year) go to its validators

Two-way ↗medium likelihood

  • Mar 18, 2027: the 70B re-mint leaves the 24-month window, so supply moves from 1 to the DPoS cap of 3 unless the schedule changes again
  • The Prop 37 buy-and-burn contract going live and its first monthly burn hashes and amounts (routed and revenue)
  • Strategic Reserve flows: 1.167B CRO a month leaves cro198...7f4h; whether it funds staking or reaches the market
  • SEC action on the Canary Staked CRO and 21Shares Cronos ETFs (access 2 to 3)
  • Trump Media's 756M CRO (first sale window from Aug 26, 2026) and Cronos validator concentration

Research report

Oct 23, 2026 · source confidence 80%

CRO is the native token of the Cronos chains, built and largely run by Crypto.com. Its supply history is unusual. Crypto.com created 100 billion tokens in 2018, burned 70 billion in 2021, and in March 2025 a governance vote it proposed minted 70 billion back into a Cronos Strategic Reserve. That reserve releases about 1.17 billion tokens a month until 2030, and the released tokens have been moved to other Crypto.com wallets, so the circulating supply grew about 41% over the past year. New issuance from staking is small and falling (0.70% a year, decaying monthly) under a 100 billion cap that governance can change. Value capture is still prospective: an October 2026 vote commits all revenue from two new Cronos products to buying and burning CRO, but the burn contract is in development, and on-chain fee revenue was about $0.1 million over the past year. Control is concentrated: the reserve and related wallets hold over 60% of supply, and a few validators that appear to be run by Cronos hold more than a third of voting power on both Cronos chains. US spot ETF applications are pending, while a planned CRO treasury company with Trump Media was cancelled in August 2026.
