Assessment

Polkadot fixed its supply story in 2025-26: Referendum 1710 capped DOT at 2.1B and the Mar 14, 2026 step cut issuance by 53% to ~3.3% a year, falling every two years. What it has not fixed is demand for blockspace: fees are negligible, coretime sells at its floor price, and the remaining sinks were redirected into a governance-run allocation pool, so holders own a well-scheduled dilution with no cash-flow claim. Distribution is insider-heavy (Web3 Foundation's 30% plus private sales, about 29% of all DOT issued) and the Foundation's current balance is undisclosed. Security is reasonable in cost (~$0.36B to seat a third of validators) but 2026 brought an unexploited critical slashing bug, an election stall that froze staking for three days and parachain stalls after a runtime upgrade. One small US spot ETF exists after Grayscale withdrew.

How value reaches holders

Nothing material reaches holders. Staking rewards are new issuance: 153,000 DOT/day (55.9M/yr since Mar 14, 2026), split by the Dynamic Allocation Pool since Ref 1909 (Jun 29, 2026) into 45.2% staker rewards, 22.6% validator self-stake incentive and 32.2% buffer (6.15M DOT on Oct 23, 2026). Asset Hub transaction fees and slashes also flow to the DAP rather than to stakers or a burn, and the 1%-per-period treasury burn ended with DAP Phase 1 (runtime 2.1.1, Mar 23, 2026). Only coretime sale revenue is still burned (RFC-010), and bulk cores sell at the 10 DOT floor (35 of 89 sold in the current sale). Protocol revenue is under $0.5M a year

Research report

Oct 23, 2026 · source confidence 75%

Polkadot reworked its token economics in 2025 and 2026. A referendum approved in September 2025 capped supply at 2.1 billion DOT, and on March 14, 2026 annual issuance fell from 120 million to about 55.9 million DOT, roughly 3.3% of the 1.71 billion in existence, with further reductions every two years. New DOT now flows through a Dynamic Allocation Pool that splits it between staking rewards, a validator incentive and a governance-controlled buffer. What the network lacks is revenue. Transaction fees on Asset Hub and the relay chain amount to a small fraction of a million dollars a year, bulk coretime sells at its 10 DOT minimum price, and since March 2026 fees and slashes go to the allocation pool instead of being burned, so holders receive no share of fees beyond staking rewards funded by issuance. The original 2017 sale sold half of the genesis supply, while the Web3 Foundation kept about 30% and later private sales and the team took the rest, and the Foundation does not publish its current balance. Seating a third of the 600 validators would take about 307 million DOT. In 2026 the network patched an unexploited critical slashing bug and recovered from a three-day staking election stall. One small US spot ETF from 21Shares holds DOT.

Structure (14 facts)
Chain
Relay chain (BABE/GRANDPA, NPoS) with system parachains; balances, staking and governance moved to Polkadot Asset Hub (Nov 4, 2025); fellowship runtime v2.5.0 (spec 2,005,000) live on relay, Asset Hub and Coretime chain on Oct 23, 2026; JAM not live (a 'JAM Prime' path for Kusama is under debate)
Market
price ~$1.18, market cap ~$2.01B, ~$172M/day volume (CoinGecko, Oct 23, 2026); ATH $54.98 (Nov 4, 2021), now -97.9%; -60% over one year, 1y low ~$0.75
Supply
1,708,705,610 DOT (Asset Hub TotalIssuance, Oct 23, 2026) vs 1,629,355,679 a year earlier (relay, Oct 22, 2025): +79.4M (+4.9%) because 120M/yr ran until Mar 14, 2026
Emission
Ref 1710 (approved Sep 14, 2025): 2.1B cap; from relay block 30,349,908 (Mar 14, 2026, TI 1,674,342,153) each two-year period emits 26.28% of the remaining gap, i.e. 111.86M DOT for Mar 2026-Mar 2028 = 55.93M/yr (153,000 DOT/day), verified on-chain at ~55.9M/yr Jul-Oct 2026; next step Mar 14, 2028 to ~41.2M/yr; cap approached asymptotically. Per-era emission capped at 7x the old daily amount
Mint authority
issuance is coded in the Asset Hub runtime (EraPayout stepped curve); any change needs a runtime upgrade by OpenGov referendum (Root track, or the Whitelisted Caller track with Technical Fellowship whitelisting, used to enact Ref 1914 within ~3 days in Jul 2026); DAP budget changes need Root origin
Distribution
genesis 10M DOT (x100 redenomination Aug 21, 2020 to 1B): Oct 2017 sale 50% (~$145M; ICO Drops lists a pre-sale and public auction at the same ~$0.29 post-redenomination price), Web3 Foundation ~30%, ~20% reserved for later private sales (2019 ~5% at ~$1.20, 2020 3.4% at ~$1.25, ~$43M) and team/ecosystem; much of the 2017 sale ETH was frozen by the Nov 2017 Parity multisig bug. Insiders ~500M, ~29% of the ~1.72B DOT ever issued. W3F votes in OpenGov since 2025 and does not publish its balance
Treasury
treasury account 21.46M DOT and DAP buffer 6.15M DOT (Asset Hub, Oct 23, 2026); DAP buffer grew from 0.89M on Jul 9, 2026
Value accrual
none to holders: Asset Hub fees route to the DAP staging account (runtime v2.5.0 OnChargeTransaction), slashes and burn hooks to the DAP, treasury Burn = (); DAP drip split set by Ref 1909 (Jun 29, 2026) to 45.2% stakers / 22.6% validator self-stake incentive / 32.2% buffer, max commission 0; coretime revenue still burned per RFC-010
Revenue
under $0.5M/yr: relay fees ~$10K trailing year (DefiLlama, relay only after migration); Asset Hub sample of 40 blocks on Oct 23, 2026: ~0.48 signed extrinsics per block over ~39.6K blocks/day, median estimated fee ~0.0009 DOT; bulk coretime end price at the 10 DOT minimum, 35 of 89 cores sold in the current sale
Security
600 active validators of 744 candidates, 28,262 nominators, 919.66M DOT staked (53.8%) in era 2332; minimum validator self-bond 10,000 DOT (Ref 1890, Jun 12, 2026); seating 1/3 of validators needs ~307M DOT (~$0.36B); Parity's polkadot-sdk node is the dominant client; no alternative client with material validator share was found
Incidents
Mar 23, 2026: runtime 2.1.1 stalled 5 of 37 parachains running pre-2024 collators (relay unaffected); Apr 13, 2026: fix for a critical BEEFY/MMR ancestry-proof verification bug that let anyone file free false fork-voting reports slashing 50% of a validator's stake, live in production since Dec 2024, unexploited (28-day slash deferral as backstop); Jun 30-Jul 3, 2026: validator election stall froze eras, rewards and unbonding ~3.3 days (Ref 1909 chilling wave vs a static MinimumScore), fixed by Ref 1914; May 2026 People Chain stall
Usage
Hydration TVL $53.8M (vs $253M a year earlier), Polkadot stablecoins $68.6M, Bifrost $4.2M; no measurable third-party collateral or payment use
Institutional access
21Shares Polkadot ETF (TDOT) effective Mar 4, 2026 (8-A12B), renamed 21Shares Polkadot Staking ETF Aug 26, 2026; net assets $7.39M on Jun 30, 2026 (79.7% of DOT staked via Coinbase and Figment); Grayscale Polkadot ETF S-1 withdrawn Aug 7, 2026
Unlocks
no scheduled insider unlocks; supply growth is coded issuance; staking unbonding 28 days for validators, nominator fast unbond planned
